Und dann, was geschieht dann? Dann musst du anfangen zu zeichnen.

As you know, drawings appear in the mind first. The glimmer of an inner image takes you by surprise and sets thoughts in motion; that immediately try to seize the image, seeking to hold onto it in order to ultimately be able to draw it.

Drawing in your head is a delicate and subtle undertaking, as, in the tug of war with your thoughts, the image can become distorted and might perhaps be lost altogether. Often you may even need to lose part of the image, so that later your hand can develop its own strength with greater intensity. You can induce the appearance of inner images yourself, by consciously placing yourself in a state of receptivity. Once summoned, these images are difficult to control, because they dance and fidget before your inner eye, occasionally coming to a brief standstill, incessantly changing their structure and almost driving you out of your mind. You’re constantly trying to recall particular constellations that you liked, so you can reconstruct the fragments in your mind before you set them down on paper.

Sometimes years can pass before a mental image becomes a physical one. The image cannot be forgotten; it festers, straining and yearning to be set free. It begs to be released and transferred to paper, something spiritual wanting to be born into the physical world.

Memory is the faculty from which mental images originate. The inner eye calls up images from the past which might even predate your own existence, or have been formed in an age long before our own, and have now awoken and emerged from the deepest strata of your being. They are stories, inklings and fragments that have lain dormant within you unnoticed, until one day they feel compelled, for whatever reason, to appear before your inner eye.

And then, what happens then? Then you have to start drawing.
